This is our deliberately narrow selection of works that stand apart for scale, sculptural quality, rarity, technical interest, historical importance or the depth of research they invite. The category can include Buddhist sculpture, Hindu deities, temple carving, ritual objects, thangkas and other significant Asian works.
Masterpieces / Museum Quality is a curatorial category within the gallery; it is not a claim that an institution has formally certified an object as “museum quality”. Each work must still be judged on its own attribution, condition, provenance and supporting evidence.
Exceptional modelling is only one factor. We also consider material and manufacture, age, rarity of iconographic type, scale, surviving surface, documented history, condition and whether the object contributes something meaningful to a specialist collection. A visually dramatic piece with weak attribution does not become important simply because it is large or expensive.
High-value works receive the same separation between observation and conclusion used throughout our cataloguing. Casting structure, carving, gilding, lacquer, inscriptions, base construction, repairs, patina and provenance are assessed individually. Where an attribution remains open between two regions or periods, that uncertainty is retained rather than edited away.
Detailed photographs, condition information and additional research can be supplied for major works where available. Collectors comparing broader material or regional groups can return to Bronze Buddha Statues, Nepalese Sculpture or Tibetan and Himalayan Sculpture.
