Forensic Analysis & Research Report

"At 1stBuddha, we never make claims lightly. Every object undergoes a rigorous research process — from microscopic paint analysis to database comparisons — to uncover the absolute truth regarding provenance and age."

1. Iconographic Analysis & Representation

The research starts with the representation. Central to this geometric palace is Padmasambhava (Guru Rinpoche). We have compared the iconographic details with historical texts: the mudras, the attributes such as the khatvanga, and the specific structure of the mandala rings are executed correctly. Although the composition follows classical Tibetan rules, the color saturation points to the use of pigments characteristic of later 20th-century workshops.

2. Textile Research & The Reverse Side

Textile examination of the reverse side of a thangka showing a modern machine-printed floral print

The reverse side often tells the real story. With this object, we have closely studied the backing and the finish. The stitching shows characteristics of modern manufacturing, and the fabric used on the reverse side — a machine-printed floral print — is a crucial piece of evidence. Whereas antique pieces often show natural oxidation and soot deposits, this textile is consistent with materials used in the export market from the 1990s onwards.

3. Microscopic Examination & Inscriptions

Using the microscope, we analyzed the paint layers and the inscriptions on the reverse side. The text present was set with modern blue ink, which irrefutably proves that the dedication is of recent date. Furthermore, under magnification, we see that the paint does not yet exhibit the deep natural craquelé characteristic of mineral-based pigments that have been exposed to fluctuating temperatures for centuries. The database research into similar inscriptions also confirms this zeitgeist.

4. The Final Verdict: Transparent Quality

Thanks to this 1stBuddha methodology, we can state with certainty: this is a high-quality, modern thangka (late 20th century). It is not an antique collector's item, but a skillfully hand-painted work of art that excels in decorative power. Measuring 77x55 cm, it is an impressive object for those seeking spiritual aesthetics, substantiated by an honest and factual research report.
