Antique Chinese giltwood relief panel – late Qing dynasty

Long openwork Chinese relief panel from the 19th century, carved in wood with surviving gilding and polychrome decoration. The composition forms a continuous narrative centred on scholarship, social advancement and prosperity within traditional Chinese literati culture.

At left is a scholar's study with tables, vases, flowering plants and scrolls. The centre shows a scholar or high-ranking official in ceremonial procession accompanied by attendants in long robes. At right is a richly furnished interior with tables, furniture and auspicious fruit motifs associated with prosperity, blessing and longevity.

The combination of pierced carving, red ground, traces of gilding and detailed figural scenes is characteristic of decorative Chinese woodcarving from the late Qing period.
