Antique Portrait of Rabbi Yehuda Zeitoun – Tunisian Judaica (Monastir) – ca. 1905

A rare Sephardic masterpiece: Antique portrait of a Rabbi (ca. 1905)

This characterful antique oil painting on linen canvas offers a fascinating glimpse into the Jewish history of North Africa. The work depicts a dignified Rebbe, deeply absorbed in the study of a Torah scroll. The atmospheric lighting and the refined brushwork in the beard and facial features make this a masterpiece for the serious collector of Judaica and antique portraiture.

Historical Identification & Provenance

Although unsigned, extensive iconographic research and the specific attire (the typical Tunisian turban binding) point to a very likely identification as Rabbi Yehuda Zeitoun from Monastir, Tunisia. Paintings depicting the Jewish elite of the Maghreb region from this period are extremely rare on the international market.
