Nepalese wooden shaman mask from the Middle Hills
Origin: Nepal, Middle Hills / Himalayas
Date: ca. 1900–1930
Material: hand-carved wood
Dimensions: H 23 × W 18 × D 5.5 cm
Weight: 400 g
Rounded face with broad mouth
This compact mask has a rounded skull, small pierced eyes, a long straight nose and a notably broad open mouth. Short vertical cuts along the upper mouth edge suggest a row of teeth. Separately modelled ears give the face additional sculptural depth.
Hand-carved construction
The reverse is deeply hollowed and preserves clear chopping and chisel marks. The interior has a dark patina and long-term wear. Its relatively thick rim and compact timber indicate a robust object intended for repeated ritual use.
Patina and condition
The surface carries a deep dark-brown to black-brown patina with old shrinkage cracks, worn areas and small losses. Nose, ears and mouth edge have been naturally softened through prolonged handling. The mask remains unrestored.
Each object is examined before it is offered: material, casting or carving technique, surface, and signs of age are compared with documented references. You will receive a certificate of authenticity and an official invoice detailing the period, material, and available provenance.
