Expressive ritual mask
The large bulging eyes, long projecting nose and broad smiling mouth with incised teeth give this mask a distinctive, almost theatrical presence within the ritual folk traditions of Nepal’s Middle Hills.
Construction and surface
The reverse is very deeply hollowed by hand and preserves clear adze and carving marks. The front has a dark aged surface with wear and local traces of red pigment around the mouth. Rectangular side blocks and the tall flat upper section reinforce its sculptural character.
Condition
Good antique condition with age- and use-related wear. An old crack is visible at the top, together with small edge losses, surface abrasion and local material losses. A later hanging cord has been added to the reverse.
