Large antique Thai crowned Buddha in bronze
This substantial sculpture belongs to the richly ornamented bronze tradition of nineteenth-century Siam. Rather than presenting the Buddha in a plain monastic robe, the figure is shown with a tall tiered crown, elaborate chest jewellery, shoulder ornaments and decorated arm and ankle bands, creating the formal presence associated with royal or crowned Buddha imagery in Rattanakosin-period art.
Maravijaya and the earth-touching gesture
The right hand extends across the knee to touch the earth while the left hand rests open in the lap. This is the Bhumisparsha gesture, recalling the Buddha’s victory over Mara and the moment in which the earth is called to witness his enlightenment. In Thai art this powerful iconography is closely associated with Maravijaya.
Traditional hollow casting with surviving core
The bronze weighs an exceptional 41.2 kg. The open underside retains extensive areas of the original earthen and clay casting core, together with dark deposits and irregular internal surfaces. These untouched construction details are particularly useful for understanding the traditional casting process and are fully documented in the photographs.
Rattanakosin crown, jewellery and pedestal
The refined crown terminates in a high pointed finial and is balanced by ornate earrings, shoulder elements and layered jewellery across the torso. A broad lotus and throne base with pierced cartouches gives the sculpture a strong architectural foundation. The exterior preserves a deep brown patina with natural tonal variation, small casting pits, rubbing and old surface marks.
Condition and dimensions
Good antique condition with expected age-related wear, minor pitting, scratches and small edge losses. The aged patina and surviving casting-core material have been retained.
