Bronze Buddha Head with Monumental Presence
This expressive Buddha head is cast in a warm copper alloy, combining a broad, tranquil face with strongly modelled hair curls, a raised urna and elongated openwork earlobes. Its visual language is inspired by Nepalese-Himalayan traditions while also displaying distinct Southeast Asian influences, giving the sculpture a powerful individual character.
The head was traditionally hollow cast. Its smoothly finished face contrasts beautifully with the animated surface of the hair and tiered finial. Closed eyes and a restrained smile create a serene presence, while the age marks surrounding the ushnisha add tangible historical depth.
Iconography
The urna signifies spiritual insight. The elongated earlobes recall Siddhartha Gautama’s princely origins, while the ushnisha represents wisdom and enlightenment.
Material and Technique
Hollow-cast bronze or copper alloy, locally finished and polished. The surface shows natural discolouration, patina, casting traces and remnants of older filling or fixing materials around the hair and finial.
Date and Origin
Nepalese-Himalayan inspired tradition with Southeast Asian stylistic influences. Probably made during the 20th century.
Condition
Good decorative condition with visible age and wear. The upper finial has an open seam and evidence of an earlier attachment or restoration. Wear, deposits and local filling residues are visible among the hair curls. The face and elongated earlobes remain largely intact. Please examine all detailed photographs, which form an integral part of the condition description.
