Monumental Southeast Asian bronze Buddha sheltered by Mucalinda
Dimensions: H 97 × W 44 cm
Weight: 48 kg
Material: Bronze
Period: First half of the 20th century, circa 1900–1940
Origin: Southeast Asia
Form and workmanship
A substantial hollow-cast bronze depicting the Buddha seated upon the coils of the serpent king Mucalinda. The composition is dominated by an elaborate three-headed naga canopy, with strongly modelled heads rising above the figure. Incised scale patterns and dense ornamental detailing extend across the reverse and coiled base.
Casting and surface
The sculpture was produced by traditional lost-wax casting. Open areas reveal irregular bronze wall thickness and surviving core material containing coarse and fibrous inclusions. The surface retains a dark brown bronze tone with areas of green copper oxidation, wear and long-term surface alteration.
Condition
Age-related wear, local oxidation, casting irregularities and small openings to projecting elements. Construction details and surface condition are clearly illustrated in the accompanying photographs.
Each object is examined before it is offered: material, casting or carving technique, surface, and signs of age are compared with documented references. You will receive a certificate of authenticity and an official invoice detailing the period, material, and available provenance.
