Classic Chinese motif
This matching pair depicts two powerful water buffaloes with young herd boys on their backs. The buffalo and herd boy form a beloved subject within the Chinese artistic tradition, associated with rural life, simplicity, and harmony between man and nature.
Finely carved hardwood
The animals are vividly rendered with deeply curved horns, inlaid eyes, and exceptionally finely incised fur. The separately modeled herd boy figures wear traditional clothing and headgear. Both groups rest on openwork, rock-shaped wooden bases.
Old patina and signs of use
The hardwood has a warm, dark reddish-brown patina with natural wear and minor traces of age. On the underside, old finish and, on one figure, remnants of a paper label are visible. The extensive series of photos documents both figures from all angles, including details and undersides.
