A miniature shrine carved as one composition
Rather than presenting the Buddha as an isolated figure, this Sri Lankan carving encloses him within a tall arched backplate. An incised radiating halo surrounds the head, while the seated figure, pedestal and shrine-like frame read as a single devotional unit. Both hands rest in the lap in Dhyana mudra.
Ceylon calamander
The carving is made from calamander, the celebrated Sri Lankan ebony relative Diospyros quaesita. Wear through the dark surface finish reveals the wood's distinctive warm chestnut and golden-brown streaking, particularly along the backplate and base. That natural figure is an important part of the object's visual character.
