Monumental standing Buddha in richly engraved bronze alloy
An impressive standing Buddha measuring 83 cm in height, created in a Tibetan/Himalayan-inspired sculptural tradition. The serene figure stands on a shaped lotus pedestal and wears a long, richly decorated robe. Its substantial scale, slender vertical composition and carefully hand-incised ornament give the sculpture a powerful architectural presence.
Both hands are shown in Vitarka mudra: the thumb and index finger touch to form a circle, the gesture of teaching and discussion. The right hand is raised, while the left points downward and repeats the same gesture, presenting the Buddha unmistakably as a teacher. A stylised wheel motif is engraved in the palm, interpretable as a reference to the Dharmachakra, the Wheel of Buddhist teaching.
Decoration and iconography
The treatment of the robe is particularly refined. Repeated geometric circular medallions are combined with broad floral and geometric borders. This ornament draws on older Indian and Himalayan textile and sculptural traditions, without asserting a precise regional origin. The crisp, subtly irregular lines show that much of the detail was applied to the metal by hand after casting.
The lotus pedestal provides a balanced base for the elongated figure. The sculpture is fully worked from front to back, allowing it to display convincingly as a freestanding object.
Material and technique
The statue is made from bronze or a related copper alloy using a traditional hollow-casting method. Visible remnants of the original core or investment material remain underneath. The irregular inner wall and core residues are consistent with artisanal hollow casting; they do not in themselves prove an early date.
Date and origin
Tibetan/Himalayan-inspired tradition, probably circa 1950–1980. The style and ornament refer to earlier Buddhist prototypes, but in the absence of documented provenance or technical analysis the piece is deliberately not offered as definitively Tibetan or 19th century.
Condition
Good vintage condition with age- and use-related marks consistent with the material and estimated date. Local patina, light wear and minor irregularities from casting and hand finishing may be present and contribute to its authentic character. Remnants of the casting core are visible at the open underside. Please examine the photographs carefully as part of the condition description.
