A crowned Buddha from Bangkok

Dressed as a king, this Buddha stands upright with his right hand raised in abhaya mudra and his left arm held straight along his side. His crown has flame-shaped side pieces, and above a beaded band the ushnisha rises into a tall flame finial, the ketumala. Dense floral and scroll relief covers the front of the robe, while at the back it falls as a smooth mantle. The figure stands on a lotus bud set on a stepped, eight-sided base.

Period and making

This is the Bangkok type of the crowned Buddha in royal attire, made in Thailand during the Rattanakosin period, around 1880–1930. It is cast hollow in bronze and covered with gold leaf over a dark ground layer. The open underside shows the casting core, a brown casting skin and green copper patina; there is no modern paint or electroplating. The relief is dense but soft and repetitive and the face follows convention, which fits that date. Gold leaf worn through to the metal and verdigris inside point to long use.

Condition

The figure is structurally complete, with the finial and both arms present. The gilding is heavily worn on the face, arms, back and base edge, so bronze and the dark ground show through. There are small losses to the crown points, casting pores in the relief, and wear and green patina along the base edge. The underside is open with old core remains. No modern stand.
