The hands lie in the lap with the thumbs just touching – dhyana mudra, the gesture of meditation. The Buddha sits in full lotus, his robe drawn over the left shoulder and gathered in heavy, rounded folds across the lap and legs. Large snail-shell curls cover the head and the rounded ushnisha, and a small jewel is set into the front of the hair. The face is calm, with half-closed eyes, a round urna and long earlobes; rings of folds circle the neck.
This is a vintage piece from Japan, made in the middle of the 20th century rather than an antique. It is a hollow bronze casting. The open, irregular underside still shows remnants of the casting core and reddish-brown oxidation, and at 5.8 kg for a height of 29.5 cm the walls are thick.
Green-blue patina with earthy, pinkish-brown deposits in the folds. The high points of the curls are worn, a few curls have broken off at the crown, and there are small casting flaws and losses at the base and fingers. No break runs through the figure, and there is no modern stand. Please do not clean the patina aggressively.
