Description

Monumental Burmese Buddha head from the Mandalay tradition, carved from substantial wood and finished with black lacquer, gilding and richly inset glass and mirror elements. The serene face is crowned by an exceptionally tall pointed ushnisha with strongly modelled hair forms. The headband is decorated with white, blue, red and yellow inlay.

Old temple fragment

The reverse is deeply hollowed, clearly showing that the head was originally made as part of a larger wooden figure. Its construction, old lacquer layers, gilding, craquelure and wear are consistent with an old devotional temple object. The head was later mounted on a restrained black display stand.

Condition

Good antique condition with clear age-related wear. The gilding and black lacquer show natural rubbing, craquelure and local losses. Much of the decorative inlay remains. The patina and wear reinforce the historic character of the piece.
