Antique Napoleon III Papier-Mâché Tray – Japonism Decoration – France ca. 1865-1880
History, art, and Asian inspiration come together in this original antique Napoleon III tray from the second half of the 19th century. The object was crafted during the heyday of European Japonism, a period in which Japanese art and culture exerted a tremendous influence on the French elite and art world.
The depiction shows an atmospheric Japanese river landscape with elegant figures in traditional clothing, boats on the water, and the iconic Mount Fuji on the horizon. The combination of gold accents, hand-painted details, and deep black lacquer creates a look that immediately brings to mind the luxurious interiors of the Second French Empire.

Condition
