Teaching gesture and palm emblem
This surviving right hand was cast as part of a larger Buddhist image. The thumb and index finger meet in the teaching gesture known as Vitarka mudra, while a raised floral chakra is set into the palm. The combination gives the fragment both iconographic clarity and considerable sculptural presence.
Modelling and patina
The fingers are unusually elongated and fluid, contrasting with the densely decorated wrist band below. The bronze carries layered brown, green and blue-green oxidation, together with age-related rubbing and surface variation.
Catalogue note
Detached Buddha hands of this type were originally integral to monumental devotional bronzes. Mounted independently, this example retains the elegant line, ritual gesture and decorative detail associated with 19th-century Thai bronze sculpture.
