Japanese bronze meditation Buddha (Dhyana Mudra) – lot 136

Estimated value: €200 – €350.

Compact Japanese bronze Buddha in dhyana mudra (meditation posture), solid cast in a copper alloy. The statue is remarkably heavy for its small size, indicating a dense, solid casting rather than a decorative or hollow export object. The serene facial expression, the simple hair pattern, and the soberly modeled robe lines are consistent with Japanese Buddhist domestic statues from the late Edo period to the early 20th century.

The surface displays a natural, dark patina with wear from prolonged handling. Microscopically, polishing marks, oxidation, and remnants of an old wax or oil layer are visible, consistent with traditional care in a domestic or devotional context.
