This monumental Chinese cloisonné pair is the subject of a detailed research and valuation dossier by 1stBuddha. Our study identifies the two figures as Lü Dongbin and Lan Caihe, both associated with the Eight Daoist Immortals.
Iconography: the An Baxian and Qianlong mark
The red medallions on the robes are central to the identification. Their motifs belong to the An Baxian, the “Hidden Eight Immortals”, in which attributes stand in for the individual immortals themselves. The dossier examines these symbols alongside the figures and the six-character Qianlong mark.
Technique, construction and surface history
The assessment considers the cloisonné technique, closed base, visible construction details, patina and wear to both enamel and metal. The contrast between the gilded faces and the darker surfaces of the neck and hair is also examined within the restoration and surface history of the pair.
The full valuation records the proposed dating, object data, condition, inherited provenance history and photographic evidence.
