This sublime, antique bronze Buddha statue marks the refined transition from the late Ayutthaya to the early Rattanakosin period (18th to early 19th century). The statue captures the Buddha at the ultimate moment of enlightenment: the Bhumisparsha Mudra, in which he invokes the earth as a witness to his victory over Mara. A powerful symbol of spiritual authority and transcendent wisdom.
The statue bears witness to classic Thai aesthetics with a tall, slender torso and a refined oval face. The high, flaming rasmi on the ushnisha symbolizes divine enlightenment. The Buddha is seated in the half-lotus position on a minimalist, sleek throne base, placing the focus on the restrained elegance of the form.
Crafted using the traditional 'lost-wax' method and finished with authentic gold leaf on a dark lacquer base. Authenticity is confirmed by microscopic analysis: the gold is thick in the folds of the smile, while on the chin it has worn away wafer-thin due to centuries of devotional touch. In the deepest grooves, natural copper oxidation (malachite) manifests itself, having grown through the lacquer layer from the bronze. The underside reveals the original casting core with traces of carbonization, characteristic of a pre-industrial altarpiece.
