A rare throne type on a monumental Burmese bronze

The defining feature of this 19th-century Shakyamuni is its elephant-supported throne. Instead of the more familiar plain lotus or stepped pedestal, sculpted elephants carry the seated Buddha and turn the lower half into a substantial architectural composition. At 118 cm high and 44 kg, the bronze has the scale required for a major devotional or ceremonial setting.

Shakyamuni calling the earth to witness

The Buddha's right hand reaches down in Bhumisparsha mudra. The gesture identifies the decisive episode beneath the Bodhi tree and places the image firmly within the central Theravada narrative of the historical Buddha. The left hand remains composed in the lap.

Regional character

The sculpture belongs to the Burmese/Myanmar Buddhist world, with stylistic connections to Shan production of the 19th century. Within that tradition, facial modelling, robe treatment and throne construction varied between workshops; here the commanding elephant base is what gives the bronze its individual character.
